What is an Employment & Legal Issues Officer?

-helping people find local employment resources, local recruitment resources, and local legal resources

*this position does NOT provide legal advice or interpretations of the law

*ATEK is not a union, and this position does NOT represent or mediate member's issues directly with the employer

*this position does NOT recommend individual organizations unless no others exist to fill that need

*this position requires responding directly to numerous requests for information from members

*this position is sometimes more demanding than others and sometimes requires direct conflict resolution skills

*this position is distinctly different from the Emergency Needs Officer, and all emergency, crisis, or emotional issues will be separated from legal issues. All emergency crisis and emotional issues will be forwarded to the Emergency Needs Committee.

*this position often puts the officer in direct contact with people in very emotional and disturbing situations, so a neutral tone when dealing with matters is important

-this role does NOT deal with counselling personal problems such as depression and suicidal ideation

-awareness of the unique, emotional problems encountered by teachers living and working outside of their home cultures is required

-as an officer, you will be open to ongoing chats with those who must face particularly complex dilemmas

-you have the patience to help ATEK members work through these issues on the phone or by E-mail at length

-you are comfortable knowing that not every situation can be resolved and that not every case should be handled if it doesn’t meet the requirements of our established procedures

-you are comfortable with and have patience following established procedures but take the initiative to make efforts to improve those procedures in the future through a formal approval process before changes are made so that effectiveness can be implemented and measured gradually

-you have a keen eye for detail, and you are highly organized

-previous service as a lawyer, paralegal, or equivalent experience preferred

-Education in Criminology, Law or equivalent preferred

-consistent when following up with inquirers by both E-mail and telephone

-officers from each PMA will serve on the Employment and Legal Committee nationally and specialize in one of several roles
