Join the Busan ATEK Facebook group.
ATEK is the Association for Teachers of English in Korea, a nation-wide network for English teachers on E and F visas. It is an organization by and for teachers that is being built out of our shared experiences as employees in English language education. We work to uphold the welfare and rights of all teachers on visas.
It can be challenging to be far from home in a land where a new language dominates, and to adjust to a new employer, a new system, and a new culture. Many issues are bound to arise. That's why support and protection are needed. And, who better to understand our situation and needs than ourselves? By helping each other, we can ensure that teaching in Korea becomes a more positive experience for all concerned.
Busan ATEK works out of the Busan Human Rights Counseling Center (Busan Ingwan Sangdam Center) in Yeonsan2-dong, Yeongje-gu. It doubles as the office of a National Human Rights Commissioner. The Center assists migrant workers, and any teacher in need or with questions can go there any time for assistance. It's near City Hall and the Yeongje-gu Emart. A Busan ATEK volunteer is on hand from 2:00 to 4:00 on Sundays. The office phone number is 051-722-6182 and our emergency cell phone number is 010-3174-3931 (English).
While we already have a number of active volunteers, need more teachers to get involved. The organization will be what members make it. We provide emergency shelter for teachers who are summarily dismissed, and sympathetic ears. We also provide information on services and activities in Busan, and we are currently developing volunteer opportunities in Busan for teachers interested in serving the community.
We hold a regular social and networking event at O'Bryan's Pub (outside Exit 2, Gaya subway station) on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:00 to 10:00.
