Officer Roles

*all officers must be General Members of ATEK (i.e., verified as teachers of English or of a subject taught in English). If you would like to become a General Member, please view the instructions provided at atek.or.kr/welcome. When you are ready to nominate yourself for a role, please only choose one and follow the nomination and elections process by going to atek.or.kr/officers).  
  

Local Officers

Chair
-oversees the agenda of the president at the local level
-oversees the development of officers and their activities at the local level. (This primarily includes organizing an activity once per month focused on the activity of a vacant role. For example, organizing a volunteer activity to recruit a Volunteer Officer from the attendees of the event. Similarly, you might hold a meeting about Hagwon Issues to recruit someone passionate about studying and writing about the changes to and issues in the Hagwon Industry.)
-acts as the primary liaison with local gu-offices, their representatives, and their mayors as well as other major and minor organizations in your province
-each Chair serves on the National Council

Vice Chair
-helping the Chair to oversee the development of officers and their activities at the local level

Membership Officer
-management of membership data at the local level
-helps with the verification of votes and the voting process at the local level
-distribution of messages to members on behalf of local officers

Communications Officer (click here for more info)
-serving on the Press Committee, this role helps with the approval of permanent content on the website, in the guide book, and other media outlets regarding local content; helps draft press releases on behalf of the association at the local level; and acts as the primary contact for media-related inquiries locally

Human Rights Officer (click here for more info)
-helping to moderate local discussions to create and provide resources for various human rights issues to be heard locally and nationally

Volunteer Officer (click here for more info)
-helping to coordinate local community outreach programs

Ethics Officer (click here for more info)
-acts as the facilitator of local council meetings
-if futher action is needed, this officer helps to manage and evaluate disputes among members at all levels

Key Issues Officer
-local internal journalist and oversees the development of our local and national newsletters
-podcast and other interviews about the activities of local officers and members
-officers from each PMA will serve on the Key Issues Committee nationally and specialize in one of the following types of interviews: Committee Chair, National Officer Interviews, PMA Officer Interviews, Special Topic/Organization Interviews
-one Key Issues Officer from the Key Issues Committee will serve as Chair of that Committee and serve on the National Council

Social Officer

-promotion of local activities and fun
-coordinating with Social Officers from other PMA's to organize ATEK’s annual convention

Secretary
-familiarity with spreadsheets, Excel, Google Docs preferred but training provided
-background in administration, human resources, or training is preferred
-you are a very organized person
-you will attend Local Council meetings and keep minutes
-you will help the Chair install and modify the agenda at the local level to help ensure the reduction or elimination of the pursuit of activities not or not yet a part of the agenda and to help keep officers consistently performing their duties

-providing advice on how to be a better teacher
-management of ATEK Awards
*you must be a KOTESOL member to serve in this role

Employment and Legal Issues Officer (click here for more info)
-helping people find local employment resources, local recruitment resources, and local legal resources
*this position does NOT provide legal advice or interpretations of the law

Emergency Needs Officer (click here for more info)
-helping to coordinate people and resources to help those in immediate emergency medical or psychological crisis needs locally and nationally

Inter-Cultural Communications Officer (click here for more info)
*not required to be bilingual in Korean and English
-organizes cultural events to educate the Korean community about foriegn cultures or the foreigner community about Korean culture

Webmaster
-basic or advanced management of posting pictures and content on our local pages
-basic HTML skills preferred but no longer required
-Joomla experience preferred, but training can be provided

Local Representatives
-moderate discussions, create/find resources for the Education sub-industry issues (including reports, articles, etc.)

National Executive & National Council

President
-sets the agenda and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) at the National and Local level
-serves on the National Executive

Vice President
*must first be a National Council Rep in one of our 16 PMA's an then elected by the National Council to be Vice President
-oversees the duties of the National Council
-oversees the National Council's approval of National Bylaws, Commissions, Committees, and Ethical Issues among members
-serves as President in the absence of the President

Membership Officer
-serves on the National Executive
-oversees the verification of General and Associate Membership and the collection of management of that data at the national and local level
-oversees the verification of votes and the voting process at the national and local level
-distribution of messages to members on behalf of national and local officers
-experience with Google Docs, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint required
-experience with VB Scripts/Macros preferred
-experience with shared online data management tools preferred
-experience with Visio and Process/Data Flow Diagrams preferred

Internal Communications Officer
-serves on the National Executive
-oversees access to data and communication tools at the local and national level (including email, the website, and forums)
-provides training to all officers regarding communication tools to enhance Standard Operating Procedures
-oversees the development of Committees and Commissions (not approval of them)
-experience with Google Docs, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint required
-experience with Visio or creating Process/Data Flow Diagrams preferred

Communications Officer
-serves on the National Executive
-oversees the approval of permanent content on the website, in the guide book, and other media outlets
-oversees the issuance of press releases on behalf of the association nationally and the approval of them locally
-acts as the primary contact for media-related inquiries nationally and locally
-monitors the English/Korean mainstream press in Korea and all stories related to teaching in Korea, ATEK, or stories about changes in immigration or labor law
-monitors the popular blogs and reports on references to ATEK
-acts as managing Editor of ATEK Press, which produces the Guidebook
-acts as a surrogate for the President and the Association on broadcast media (conduct radio , TV, and podcast interviews)
-acts as Chairman of the "media committee"
-acts as advisor to the President and is a Member of the Executive Council
-journalism, mass communications degree and or equivalent experience required

Inter-Cultural Communications Officer
*does not have to be bilingual in Korean and English
-serves on the National Executive
-oversees the management of a pool of translators to satisfy the translation needs of the National Executive
-oversees the development of cultural understanding for foreign teacher in both the workplace and society at the national and local level
-oversees the development of permanent content for the website and guide book in regards to Korean culture and history

General Secretary
-elected from the National Council, serves as Vice President in the absence of the Vice President
-attends National Council and National Executive meetings and keeps minutes primarily to provide regular and transparent communication between the two bodies of the association
-helps the President and other Executive Officers install and modify the agenda at the national and local level to help ensure the reduction or elimination of the pursuit of activities not or not yet a part of the agenda and to help keep officers consistently performing their duties

Web Administrator
-serves on the National Executive
-advanced management of content and framework of our website
-Joomla, Droopal, or equivalent experience preferred, but training can be provided
-forum management experience preferred, but training can be provided
